Piriformis Syndrome| Treatment | Chesterfield Target Physio

Piriformis Syndrome

Get expert treatment for Piriformis Syndrome pain at Chesterfield Target Physio.

What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is a condition where the piriformis muscle in the buttock compresses the sciatic nerve, causing pain, numbness, and tingling down the back of the leg and into the foot. It usually affects one side of the body and is a form of ‘sciatica’ that originates in the hip rather than the spine. It’s important to note that most buttock and leg pain is due to lower back issues, not the piriformis muscle itself.

Anatomy of the Piriformis Muscle and Sciatic Nerve

The piriformis is a small, triangular muscle in the buttock that helps stabilise the hip and rotate the leg outward. The sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, passes close to or through the piriformis muscle as it travels down the leg.

What Causes Piriformis Syndrome?

● Rapid increase in activity or training

● Long distance running

● Sitting for long periods

● Heavy lifting or poor posture

● Muscle imbalances or tightness

● Unequal leg lengths

When overused or stressed, the piriformis can spasm and compress the sciatic nerve, causing pain.

Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome:

● Sharp pain in the buttock

● Radiating pain down the back of the thigh and calf

● Discomfort with prolonged sitting

● Pain with stair climbing or incline walking

● Muscle spasm in the buttock

● Occasional pins and needles in the leg or foot

● Tenderness with pressing on the muscle

How is Piriformis Syndrome Diagnosed?

Piriformis syndrome is typically diagnosed by exclusion—ruling out other conditions through a thorough history and physical examination. Your expert physiotherapist at Target Physio Injection Ltd will:

● Take a detailed history

● Assess your movement, muscle strength, and posture

● Conduct functional tests and gait analysis

● Perform neurological testing

If needed, MRI or ultrasound imaging may help confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.

Our Treatment for Piriformis Syndrome:

● Patient Education: Clear explanation of the condition and activity modification advice.

● Pain Relief: Ice, manual therapy, and posture correction.

● Acupuncture or Dry Needling: To reduce muscle spasm and nerve irritation.

● Hands-on Therapy: Massage and trigger point release for tight muscles.

● Stretching & Strengthening: Exercises for the glutes, adductors, and core stability.

● Functional Rehab: Tailored exercises for return to daily activities and sport.

● Running Gait Analysis: Improve technique to prevent recurrence.

Corticosteroid Injections for Piriformis Syndrome

For persistent pain, corticosteroid injections can be very effective. A combination of local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication is injected directly into the piriformis muscle, providing relief for 6–8 weeks or more. This pain-free window allows for full engagement in your physiotherapy program and long-term improvement.

We combine expert diagnosis, and advanced physiotherapy intervention to target the root cause of your pain. Our team will support you at every stage to get you back to full activity and comfort.
