Live travel vaccines

Travel Vaccines and Steroid Injection: What You Need to Know

If you're planning to have a live travel vaccine, such as:

  • Yellow Fever
  • Oral Typhoid (Ty21a capsules)
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • BCG (Tuberculosis)
  • Oral Polio (OPV – rarely used now).

It is important to consider the timing of your steroid or hyaluronic acid injection.

At Target Physio Injection Clinic, your safety is our top priority. That’s why we follow national guidance recommending a minimum 2-week gap between live vaccination and steroid injections.

Why wait 2 weeks after a live vaccine?

Steroid injections (such as those used for arthritis, bursitis, or tendon pain) may slightly suppress the immune system. While this effect is usually local and short-lived, it could reduce your body’s ability to respond fully to a live vaccine, which works by triggering a mild immune reaction. To ensure your vaccine works properly and to reduce any risk of infection or complications, we advise waiting at least 14 days after a live vaccine before having a steroid injection.

Does this apply to hyaluronic acid injections too?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are not immunosuppressive, but we still recommend a short delay after live vaccines as a precaution – especially if there's any chance of needing a combined injection (steroid + HA).
